Energy balance is the key to added value sales

With energy saving in mind, why not take the benefits of advanced glazing, which reduces energy consumption and increases comfort in our homes, as a niche to provide exceptional service and essentially add value to your product range? 

The continuous drive to improve the performance of our homes through Building Regulations and our own personal desire to reduce rocketing energy bills, are causing us to look more closely than ever at the types of products we use in our homes and the energy efficiency of those products.  In the glazing industry the Window Energy Ratings (WER) has long flown the flag for energy saving windows, claiming a calculation methodology that not only rates the thermal efficiency of a window but also rates the windows ability to harness free solar energy from the sun and reduce energy bills. On paper this perception flies the flag for sustainable and economical living; free heating from the sun helping to reduce energy bills – what could be better than that?  In reality, as any architect would tell you, this aspect of the calculation is borderline farcical, offering little to no benefit on the north face of a building, and actually increasing the chance of overheating on the east, west and specifically the south face, where high levels of solar radiation can quickly cause a building to overheat.  However despite the over emphasised benefit of solar heat gain in the WER calculation, this method of compliance has been recognised in Building Regulations as a valid means to identify a windows compliance with improved energy efficient targets for the domestic window replacement market.  Fortunately this has been backed up by an alternative whole window U value allowing flexibility to customers more aware of the pitfalls of solar heat gain and the energy saving benefits of a controlled temperature inside a building, providing optimum energy balance.  This alternative means of compliance allows customers to comply with building regulation through the required window U value performance, whilst also incorporating solar control glass on exposed elevations which would otherwise be at risk of overheating.  True energy saving is recognised through good design.   An architect would never put a high solar heat gain window on a highly exposed south building face, so why is this right for Mr & Mrs Jones buying new replacement windows?   Some of you may already experience the uncomfortable levels of high solar heat gain in some areas of your homes or offices, and if you increase the solar heat gain in these areas with new A rated windows the problem exacerbates.  This can often render a room unusable.

 In commercial building, solar control glass is a prerequisite to ensure all space is useable at any point of the day regardless of the suns position. When your customers are looking for the right windows to suit them, why not offer a more personalised service?  Consider the orientation of their house and the different levels of exposure to the sun on those elevations, and recommend the right glass to suit the bespoke needs of your customer.
